ModìLite applications

• Treatment of single or multiple benign solid thyroid nodules with a volume capable of causing cosmetic damage or local compression symptoms;
• Treatment of thyroid slow progression malignant tumours or indeterminate lesions for which doctor’s therapeutic choice can involve active surveillance or watchful waiting;
• Treatment of neck metastatic lymph nodes.

Treatment Objectives

Depending on the tissue, anatomical district, size and nature (benign or malignant) of the nodule to be treated, the objectives of ModìLite treatment are:

• For benign lesions: to determine a volumetric reduction of the nodule due to the cytoreduction process induced by laser ablation, with consequent improvement or disappearance of the symptomatology;
• For malignant lesions: to produce a complete ablation of the mass with a sufficient safety margin in order to achieve its total destruction.

How it works

One or two optical fibres are inserted via ultrasound guidance into the nodule through extremely fine gauge needles. The treatment does not require local anaesthesia and is an outpatient procedure. The treatment lasts for 10-20 minutes, which is the time required for the heat inside the nodule to destroy the treated tissue. The procedure entails no incisions or stitches and the entire session, including preparation time, lasts for approximately 30 minutes. Recovery times are very short and you can return to your normal activities the very next day after treatment. The effectiveness of ModìLite allows good results to be obtained in a single session. In the months following the treatment you will just need to carry out follow-ups of the thyroid function and ultrasounds to assess the reduction of the nodule volume. Unlike minimally invasive surgical thyroid techniques which use other energy sources (radiofrequency, microwaves), ModìLite is the only micro-invasive treatment, thanks to access with optical fibres via very fine needles (with diameter less than 1 mm).
