Non-surgical laser therapy for the treatment of thyroid nodules

What is ModìLite?

ModìLite is a micro-invasive ultrasound-guided treatment that uses the heat generated by a laser source to destroy portions of nodular tissue, causing a progressive reduction in the thyroid nodule volume and subsequent disappearance of the compressive symptoms and aesthetic issues on the throat.
Thanks to micro-invasive access with optical fibres inserted into extremely thin needles, ModìLite destroys the neoplastic tissue, thus avoiding the trauma caused by open surgery, with evident advantages, such as no or much less post-op pain, no or very brief hospitalisation, and an almost immediate return to social life.

ModìLite applications

  • Treatment of single or multiple benign solid thyroid nodules with a volume capable of causing cosmetic damage or local compression symptoms;
  • Treatment of thyroid slow progression malignant tumours or indeterminate lesions for which doctor’s therapeutic choice can involve active surveillance or watchful waiting;
  • Treatment of neck metastatic lymph nodes.

Treatment Objectives

Depending on the tissue, anatomical district, size and nature (benign or malignant) of the nodule to be treated, the objectives of ModìLite treatment are:

  • For benign lesions: to determine a volumetric reduction of the nodule due to the cytoreduction process induced by laser ablation, with consequent improvement or disappearance of the symptomatology;
  • For malignant lesions: to produce a complete ablation of the mass with a sufficient safety margin in order to achieve its total destruction.

How it works

One or two optical fibres are inserted via ultrasound guidance into the nodule through extremely fine gauge needles. The treatment does not require local anaesthesia and is an outpatient procedure. The treatment lasts for 10-20 minutes, which is the time required for the heat inside the nodule to destroy the treated tissue. The procedure entails no incisions or stitches and the entire session, including preparation time, lasts for approximately 30 minutes. Recovery times are very short and you can return to your normal activities the very next day after treatment. The effectiveness of ModìLite allows good results to be obtained in a single session. In the months following the treatment you will just need to carry out follow-ups of the thyroid function and ultrasounds to assess the reduction of the nodule volume. Unlike minimally invasive surgical thyroid techniques which use other energy sources (radiofrequency, microwaves), ModìLite is the only micro-invasive treatment, thanks to access with optical fibres via very fine needles (with diameter less than 1 mm).

Results

For benign thyroid nodules, the effectiveness of the treatment consists in the progressive reduction of the thyroid nodule over time (decrease of the volume of at least 50% compared to the basal volume one year after treatment) along with resolution/ reduction of symptoms and improvement of the quality of life of treated patients. Monitoring of treated patients and multiple scientific publications have shown that one single ModìLite session ensures long-lasting results. For malignant lesions the treatment produces a complete ablation of the mass with a sufficient safety margin in order to achieve its total destruction.

Advantages of ModìLite

  • It significantly reduces the compressive and cosmetic symptoms
  • It has a short duration (about 30 minutes – including preparation of the patient)
  • It is an outpatient procedure
  • It does not leave any marks on the neck (no scarring)
  • It guarantees very short recovery time
  • It uses very fine, painless and minimally invasive needles causing no damage
  • It does not require local or general anaesthesia
  • It produces a highly predictable and repeatable coagulation volume as required by small organs surrounded by critical vital structures
  • It does not require life-long drug therapy, as is the case with surgical removal

Patients who present with the typical symptoms associated with thyroid nodules should however consult with a specialist doctor, who can make a proper diagnosis. Once the diagnosis has been confirmed, it is up to the doctor to decide the best course of treatment.
